Getting your little one to sleep when you want them to seems almost impossible. Whether the reason is hungriness, routines or simply your baby just doesn’t want to sleep, there is always a solution for that. So, here are 5 ways to get babies to sleep easily.
Starting a Sleeping Routine
One of the ways a baby can learn their bedtime is from the surrounding environment. You should reduce the noise and dim the lights in your room about 30 minutes before getting your baby to sleep. The human brain associates light and dark with being awake or asleep. Therefore, turning the lights low at night and exposing your baby to bright light in the morning will help to develop this process.
Once you minimize the room stimuli, you can do some activities such as telling a bedtime story or singing lullabies. A nighttime ritual is recommended to start as soon as possible (around 6-8 weeks).
Stick to an Early Bedtime
Timing is just as important as a routine. Babies will be ready for an early bedtime around 8 weeks because at this time they can identify day and night better. If you decide to keep your baby up late instead, your little one will become overstimulated and difficult to sleep.
Don’t feed your baby to sleep
Newborn babies can easily fall asleep when eating and it is very common. If your baby gets used to that then every time they wake up during the night they will think that they need to eat in order to get back to sleep. Plus, the main problem is you are the only one who can put your baby back to sleep if it happens. However, if the act of falling to sleep is separated from feeding then babies tend to sleep overall. So, if you see your baby nodding off while sleeping, you should start the bedtime routine a little sooner. Gradually move the feeding time earlier until your baby can get through it. Besides, you might still need to get up at midnight but this is for hunger, not soothing.
Set napping guidelines
You should try to let your baby have at least one nap a day in their crib, so the little one can get the quality rest they need. The first nap is crucial for an infant and it will dictate how the entire day goes. So, it is ideal if they have it in a comfortable crib at home. When babies reach 3 to 4 months of age, they will have longer awake periods. Therefore, you can create a napping schedule if you want to.
Let the baby work it out
Rushing in immediately to help your baby fall back to sleep will create a cycle that is hard to break. It will also teach your baby that all they need to do is cry to get you whenever they want. So, let your baby learn to get back to sleep by themselves. For example, try to do the least intrusive thing like a pat or shush (but not picking up) when your baby wakes up. If it doesn’t work then you may nurse your baby. But, next time just start with the least intrusive intervention again. The goal is to make your baby learn to self-soothe overnight but to give them enough space to allow self-soothing over time. Plus, this will help you avoid a cry-it-out situation down the line.
